Lusitanos are bred to be highly trainable and intelligent. They can be compared to a working Border Collie because both Lusitanos and Border Collies are bred for function. For the Border Collie this means working livestock and being highly trainable. For the Lusitano this is working a bull and also being highly trainable. Both Border Collies and Lusitanos have to be quick thinking and acting in order to do the kind of work they were bred for. In order to work a bull the Lusitano has to be brave, intelligent, athletic and easy to train.
Lusitanos are, in general, sensitive, and want to work with people. These qualities translate into a wonderful horse to have in your barn. Their gaits tend to be easy to sit and their ability to collect is impressive. This makes the Lusitano a perfect breed for the rider who would like to compete in dressage but who would also like to ride a brave, confident horse on the trail and/or work cattle. The Lusitano is bred for function and temperament. This is what a person lives with every day. This is what matters to our breeding and training program. We breed for a horse that is wonderful to live with and to work with.
Lusitanos love to be with people
Lusitanos excel at dressage and have soft, easy gaits
Lusitanos share similar "working" traits with Border Collies. See West Coast Lusitanos Blog on this site for further explanation.
