It is the horse's temperament that we live with, train with and work with every day It is the Lusitano temperament that makes my husband and I feel comfortable to continue to start our own horses under saddle despite our "advancing" years and the bit of gray hair that is now showing up!
We enjoy riding in the mountains in Yosemite National Park, working cattle, and training at home. We need a horse that is bold, calm, confident and has a propensity for dressage and this is why we ride Lusitanos. It is also the unique "person connection" that we enjoy and appreciate with this breed. It is a truly unique characteristic of Iberian horses to connect with humans in the way that they do. The Lusitano horse is also bred to react sensitively and actively to a rider's aids and have the ability to "return to calm" effortlessly. We are committed to maintaining these essential breed characteristics therefore temperament is our #1 breeding priority.
In addition to temperament, we select horses based on conformation, soundness, breed characteristics, and athleticism. We want a horse that is agile, sound, hardy, and medium-sized. We do not breed for any specific color but do prefer darker-skinned horses.
